I think that's key. I don't know many people who work for someone else and
have to deal with BS on a daily basis from their boss(es) that don't look
forward to retirement. On the other hand, I don't know many self-employed
individuals who wish to 'retire' per se-- after all, they already have the
best parts of it-- work when they want to and not when they don't, don't
answer to a boss, etc.

Personally, being a bit closer to the first category you described, my goal
is to do just that-- work towards being self-employed. Then the only BS to
deal with will be customers-- of which all your eggs aren't usually in one
basket(as they are with a job/boss).
