I think that the majority of doctors aren't keeping up with the areas of medicine that they need to so that they can be truly effective. Steve's flesh eating bacteria took several days to diagnose. He's alive because he started early, a surgeon in the ER recognized his symptoms, and his cardiologist just happened to be in the hospital at the time he was there. They were about to treat him for a heart attack and give him meds to lower his blood pressure, and that would have killed him because the infection lowers blood pressure to the point that it is deadly. Mortality rates are so high for conditions that are rare. And when you think about it, there are so many rare conditions that each of us are going to know people that have rare conditions.
