VS is free to use and for a solo shop make money with. There are more features in the paid-for versions and those all tie to working in teams groups etc.
For all of the Mac and Linx folk there is a VS Code app that is a very lean VS for creating code in but it will powershell/script the heck out anything you need to do. It might be a good idea to look into this now as .NET 5 is releasing today and there is a huge 3 day presentation of it from M$. Marcus Edgar did a good preview of .NET 5 a few weeks ago.
