No, really, the list is nearly infinite. I was a big fan of MythTV, a 
tremendously powerful client-server solution for capturing, converting, 
organizing and presenting video.

SlingBox is another contender.

AppleTV and iTunes might work, again depending on Charles particular 
requirements. And if you mention Apple, of course there are competing Google 
and Microsoft solutions.

And the project formerly known as XBMC, which was ever more formerly known as 
XBox Media Center, now called Kodi at kodi.tv is a great piece of software for 
playback on a variety of platforms.

There's more, far more, fully legal, sketchy Sony v. BetaMax legal and plain 
out piracy, which I'll let you root out yourself, if you'd like.

But it all depends on what Charles is asking. Does he want to play a DVD he 
made himself on a laptop without a disc? Does he want to watch the evening news 
while out on the porch? Is he looking to binge on MacGyver?
