He's really parameter checking with that TYPE test, not checking that the alias is USED.
Exactly. But if the alias is not USED(), then he assumes its TYPE() will be "U" so he doesn't have to close it. And I believe it works without having to address work areas, at least within the current datasession. I'm not sure it would work across datasessions though, but it's an interesting alternate approach.
