Definitely never use your debit card attached to your primary checking
account online. Consider never using it anywhere except at the ATM,
because even if you aren't ultimately liable for the entire loss, what
do you do in the meantime for cash flow?
My wife and I recently got Simple debit cards, which we replenish once a
month from our primary checking account and then we only use those cards
for our normal activity. Once we are out of money we are out of luck and
have to wait until the next replenishment. The replenishment amount
equals the monthly budget for each of us. Simple lets us instantly
transfer funds between our Simple cards so if she buys something that
I'm normally responsible for, I can zap her the funds to cover.
Keeps us in budget, AND shields us from losing all our disposable cash
if someone steals our card or card information. All the convenience but
with a fraction of the worry.
