HDD capacity is one thing; what are you looking at for bandwidth and
throughput? HD video is a real hog; a dozen streams are going to put a lot
of stress on networks, switches and controllers. If there's a bottleneck,
like all of the streams pouring through one network connection to the HDD
controller, that's likely to be the holdup.

Here's a handy calculator that might give you some ideas about the
capacities you've got to be thinking about:

Thanks Ted!

True that...the unit I got a price for today had dual 1GB NICs with a Quad-core Zeon processor and used SATA 6 I/O for the drives. I don't have much info about the current box, but I know it is only using a single GB NIC interface. The tech that installed it admitted that his company hadn't installed a system that large before and that they were kind of groping around as to what the best setup would be.

As of now, the owner, my client, has the info and he has to decide whether he wants to jeopardize the good relationship he has with the security company by wanting to bring in a 'solution' from another source. Hopefully they'll be accommodating. Time will tell.

Mike
