Operating systems should be perfected and made better every year, but if you have to change everything every 4 years, then you either are completely useless or your business model is completely against my best interests. If Microshit gets it so wrong after 30 years of perfecting an OS that it has to drop it all and change everything every 4 years they are useless.... or they are into the fashion business.
Some people think playing with the operating system is the whole purpose of computers. They are completely bored with the issue of how an OS can best transparently support actual work-doing applications. :)
However. Most of the software industry is, in fact, the fashion business. It's sooooo much easier to move things around a little, and break things just enough that your old software won't work anymore and you have to re-buy the same functionality, than it is to actually provide useful improvements and innovations.
I'd venture to guess that is how 9/10 of programmers make their livings these days.
