Case in point is why is the save button look like a floppy disk today? What percentage of users today ever held a floppy disk compared to a thumb drive? Could you be missing close to 50% of your audience ?
On a related note, I got a business card recently where instead of labelling the phone numbers (four of them) with words like "Office" and "Fax", icons were used. The icons were on the small side, and I think I figured them all out, but one of them was questionable. I think it was for fax, but it took me a lot longer than reading "Fax:" would have.
Icons on computers often have this same problem. I look at an icon and if I do not know what it is, then I am lost. If I look at a word and do not know it, it is easier to look it up in the help.
