problems, (e.g. xon/xoff, rts/cts) could cause gaps in the printing.

I suggest that this is likely. Small files would print fine, but when a buffer fills, the signal to stop sending is not detected.

IIRC, some printer cables can be plugged in either way, but only one way is correct, and the other way has the problem above.
