I've never heard of anyone regretting WordPress. I couldn't say the
same for Drupal or Joomla or Sharepoint.
Just to tag onto what Paul said, how about Ubuntu Server running inside
of a VM on your Windows server? Portability, stability and no
additional cost.

We are going to be revamping our intranet from the ground up - even
got a massive brand new shiny server (way overkill - the thing is a
beast). I believe it is configured already with Win 2008 Server, but I
could be wrong on exact version. Regardless, it will be Windows based,
Server edition of something....
Anyhoo, as is common with these types of projects, I will want to have
master admin control, maybe do the main landing page myself but let
users work on their own departments content as assigned.
A lot of the stuff we have is static for the most part. Links to
Word/Excel files, links to off site locations...
A few places have some ASP based reporting - lists of files based on
user selected criteria, some ASP/HTML data maintenance stuff - nothing
too terribly hard or fancy.
Originally I was thinking I'd go with WordPress as the tool of choice,
but the more I think about it perhaps Drupal would be a good call
here.
Way back I got a bad vibe from a Drupal dood about some of the upgrade
paths in regards to Drupal, but I'm not going to let that stop me.
Plus of course multitudes of sites use Drupal with great success so
who am I to argue?
These are the two that come to mind - should I be looking at anything else?
I suppose SharePoint is available but from what I've seen/used with
that in the past I want to avoid it like the plague....
