I hate the "Unity" thing, too. I discovered, though, on the log-in
screen that you can choose the classic user interface. It isn't as
obvious how to do it as in the prior version. There is some sort of
drop-down on the screen.

Sorry I can't give you specifics, but I returned from a long family
vacation to find that the Linux machine won't boot -- there isn't even
a visible boot sequence. I don't know if the on-board video is hosed
or what. Back to the real world too fast...
