In other ways it's great because you are free to use any one of a number of standard GUI libraries like Qt, wxWidgets and so on - as long as there are wrapper classes for your language of choice. It's like running Linux - I can change my Ubuntu to use the Gnome user interface, the Unity interface and so on just by choosing an option at alogin time.
Ed and Paul's Dabo is a high level GUI/data framework that provides a bunch of GUI designers for forms and reports.
