Used to do that, about 20 years ago. I can't recall any general index problems for about the last 10 years, and while we still keep the ability to automatically rebuild any 'missing' indexes, it is almost never used. I think at least half of the improvement is due to more reliable networks and servers; the rest due to more reliable disk drives.
