To get the faster duplex mode you must use memory modules in pairs. They must be specially constructed to work in this mode. I don't know how they are wired internally. So if you have 4 slots you must use two, paired modules. If you fill an odd number of slots whether the module is a special paired one or regular memory, the system reverts to simplex mode which is slower.
