In "Pragmatic Thinking and Learning," author Andy Hunt argues the idea
that mind maps get out out of the literal, linear way of thinking and
lets you access the creative "R-mode" side of your thinking.

I think it's brainstorming and doodling, but it does seem to work for some.

I know many of us have remarked we have our best and most creative
insights, not while plugging away at the keyboard burning the midnight
oil, but when we're distracted doing something else like walking the
dog or taking a shower. The mind map is intended to do something
similar.

Rather than software, I think it might make sense to use colored
pencils, like this:

It's a good book, with several thought-provoking ideas.
