Just took a look at the CyanogenMod site. Not easy to see where to start 
with it though. Also it says swype is not included so I assume I will be 
unable to use that on it. As I make lots of use of that I may not be much 
better off upgrading.

You could also root it, put CyanogenMod on it and you can put whatever
Android you like on it once Cyanogen support it. Also gets rid of the
crapware social networking apps and so on that your vendor will have put

But Windows Phone is also very attractive these days!
