I'm confused, however. You can display 1024 but can store much much more. But what is the point of storing it if you can't display it?

Not exactly. Don't confuse display with capacity. See the link below. (And it is different depending on what version of Excel you are using.) I dump large memo files into Excel cells on a regular basis.
