Well that opened my eyes, thanks guys! I wrote a quick and dirty test along the lines of those suggested before I read any of the responses after Gerard's initial one and was appalled at the results :-). What I thought was reasonably secure is most definitely not! I also realised that my approach (and any others along the same lines) was akin to putting a shiny new padlock on to strong steel bars on the front door and leaving the back door unlocked as all the data is stored in native VFP format which could easily be read and altered by a hex editor or similar by anyone with any technical knowledge.
In my defence I would say that the routine was developed for use with a supporters database for a charity where their primary concern was preventing 'helpful' volunteers from modifying the database without training or authorisation and not protecting the data against hackers.
