First rule of security for sensitive data is: If it doesn't absolutely,
positively have to be connected to the net, don't connect it there.

"Convenience" and "cheapness" are not "absolutely, positively have to".
Given how much money there is to be made by stealing sensitive data, and
how much benefit accrues to very wealthy governments that can employ the
best techs on the planet to steal it, it doesn't really matter any more how
allegedly secure your platform is. If it's on the internet, somebody is
going to find a way in and steal it or sabotage it. If they haven't figured
out how to do it today, they will tomorrow. If the whole world migrates to
super-secure Linux servers tomorrow, then maybe it will take until the week
after for somebody to figure out how to steal it off them.

If you can't stand for that to happen, don't connect it to the net, for any
reason, under any circumstances, period.

God put all that massive storage space and processor speed on your desktop
for a reason. Use it. :)
