Back in the day (1998-2001), my mom's happycookers site with about 6,000
cooking
products for sale would hit high on Google (type a product name with more than
2
words, and we were highly likely to be the first hit), and we couldn't keep up
with
the orders rolling in. Then one day, none of her pages except her home page
were
indexed in Google any longer. The orders mostly dried up.

Coincidentally, cooking.com had a big launch right around that time and all of
a
sudden, out of the blue, their products were showing top positioning.

Interestingly, googlebot was still visiting every single page on the site. It
just
wasn't putting the pages in the search index anymore.

Eventually (once we started purchasing adwords) some of our pages started
appearing
again, but almost never in the #1 position, and usually not even on the first
page.

We didn't have the money to pay the piper big enough bucks, I guess.

Paul
