Well, I've been using Skype as a means of chatting online with fellow
developers and it works well enough for our purposes. However, intense
usage of the local machine can cause choppiness, especially on a
wireless connection (audio->digitized sound->network packets->radio
signals->network packets, routed hundreds of miles->audio packets --
it's a wonder it works at all!). Fine for personal use, but not
suitable for professional use , imho.

I saw a presentation on [EMAIL PROTECTED] (renamed "TrixBox" recently) and
it looks like a great choice for an office PBX: menus, electronic
attendant, voicemail, call groups, lots of neat stuff. That would
require you to get a SIP provider for VOIP (you can find plans from
around USD 15 a month) , but it also works with plain 'ol telephone
connections and can give a SOHO a "real business" feel to it.

some interesting comments on net neutrality - and timely because I've just
decided to sign up for some 'non-free' voip - so who have I chosen?

skype? vonage? freetalk? - no, good old BT. They may not be the most trendy
or 'open' choice but they are still the only real wholesale carrier in the
UK and if anyones voip packets are going to get 'hurt' I'm guessing it
won't be BT's

btw my isp is now saying that 'contention' is old hat (anyone know about
this?) and that what counts is priority - the more you pay the better your
service. Certainly I get good service on my old-style (i.e. expensive)
account with them - it is only 256/512 which is the best my line can run -
but 90% of the time I *get* 256/512
