Hmm,

I have not got into VOIP yet as I don't make that many calls and my mobile
T-Mob contract gives me heaps of talk n text time. As for BT, you could say
that but Ofcom would cut your balls off because in theory, and I mean 'theory'
BT Wholesale has nothing to do with BT resale. In fact in my opinion they
should force BT Resale to rename its company and completely cut its ties with
BT Wholesale. There are some definite backhanders that move between the two.

As for the contention thing, I am not 100% what they mean. Maybe it's
something to do with the fact that most ISP's have some sort of traffic
management services installed onto their networks?

Oh and BTW, I use PlusNET Broadband Plus, which for £15 gives me 3GB of peak
time usage (4pm to midnight) and unlimited* at off peak. * They say that but
really there are FUP's applied (Fair usage policy).

They would be good apart from all the dodgy things they try and pull, like
recently moving people over onto an LLU with Tiscali without telling them and
then when they want to migrate, they can't because they are no longer on the BT
network.

Joys!

some interesting comments on net neutrality - and timely because I've just
decided to sign up for some 'non-free' voip - so who have I chosen?

skype? vonage? freetalk? - no, good old BT. They may not be the most trendy
or 'open' choice but they are still the only real wholesale carrier in the
UK and if anyones voip packets are going to get 'hurt' I'm guessing it
won't be BT's

btw my isp is now saying that 'contention' is old hat (anyone know about
this?) and that what counts is priority - the more you pay the better your
service. Certainly I get good service on my old-style (i.e. expensive)
account with them - it is only 256/512 which is the best my line can run -
but 90% of the time I *get* 256/512
