sorry about the rant folks. someone posed the question to me and I probably
didn't answer it.

so, what am I hoping to accomplish? well, its not me that wants to accomplish
this, but the OP. I was hoping to contribute and got a bit sidetracked.

so, I posed some additional questions:
1. can a previous version be used to compile a current version package set? the
answer, as it turns out is no.
2. can the PPC packages for 6.1 be cross compiled from a currently working 6.1
on a different platform? In all probability, yes (don't take my word for it
folks, I am no expert on this and the answer might not be as expected). I
preface this with the proviso that only the arch devs know the real answer to
this. However, given some of my recent experiences in Linux with cross
compiling, the logic says it can be done. How difficult is that? I have not the
first clue.

hopefully, this answers my part of the question. :)
