I'm not going to claim to know everything about everything, but as far as I know, that jack on the Mac Mini is output only.
Audacity seems to only show one source of audio input: sndio.

Not to be a rabble-rouser, but what's your reasoning against the eol- ed Mac OS? Not that it would solve your input problem.
nor a Linux/Debian option.
FWIW, I've had pretty good results with a Roland Edirol UA-1EX audio interface under Linux (Fedora) and Mac OS X, both for input and out. Not really cheap, but not really expensive, either. Might be able to find one used for about USD 60.00. Haven't tried it on openBSD, I suppose I should. Yeah, that's not much help. Did you check the USB Mike under Mac OS X? And it might be worth loading debian or Fedora 12 temporarily to see how the mike behaves under Linux, for comparison. Joel Rees (waiting for a 3+GHz ARM processor to come out, to test Tim's willingness to switch again.)
