I think it's okay to put this back on-list?

Did you check pdisk's internal help command in interactive mode?

Hmm. You can just type "sudo pdisk" (You don't have root login enabled, right?)
and type "help" or "?" at the pdisk prompt to get a list of top-level commands.
Then you can type "e" and it prompts for the device, to which you can type
"/dev/rdisk0", I believe. Or you can "L" and get a look at the device name. (If
you know this, sorry, I can't tell from what you've written so far.)

Once you're in edit mode, do you still not find the type command?

Yeah. It looks like (and my memory tells me, now that I've pulled that
particular swap space back in) that was one common error message from ofwboot
to tell you that it couldn't read the kernel from the available file systems
that it could read. (See Otto's comments.)

I loaded 5.0 two nights back from the install CD and it started giving me read
errors from the CD, so I just pointed it to one of the ftp mirrors and
re-loaded all the basic packages. Seems to be up now, but that reminded me
about the CD problems.

The CD connector on this clamshell iBook tends to shake itself loose really
easily. Its right under the keyboard, so I should be able to re-seat it without
even breaking out the funny screwdrivers. Need to do that before I try using
the CD again. By which I mean to say, have you tried re-seating the connections
on your drives?
