iBook G4 12 inch, openBSD 4.8 and Ruby and not much else installed,
the chrooted apache enabled and running. (Trying to set up an image
for my personal web server.)
I was logged in to a wheel user and doing sudo vipw, and when I
tried to go to the bottom of the file the video controller went
whacky, as if it were trying to write the characters to display in
bit-per-byte reversed order and only succeeding about half the time.
I could interpolate enough of what I saw to successfully dump the
edit session without saving and issue a shutdown command to reboot,
and when it came back up to ofwboot, the screen was stable, and I
was able to boot to the Fedora 12 login screen in a different
partition, and the display appears to be stable there.
Shut it down again to think about what to do next and then booted to
Mac OS 10.3 and the screen is stable there, as well.
This iBook has random shutdown problems, perhaps from a cold solder
joint on a video generator chip, according to what I've read on the
web. I re-flowed the solder on that chip last fall with the corner
of an ordinary fine tip iron (ergo, tip about 4 times too big) and
a magnifying glass, and it worked, but I started carting it to work
on the train again, and after a few weeks, it shut itself down again
while I was working on it on the train and wouldn't boot. I can undo
the case and it boots and runs. If it still has problems, I can
loosen the power board and that seems to fix it for a while, so the
power board may be indicated, as well.
Anyway, I just want to know if others have video issues on iBooks,
to get an idea if I need to abandon this iBook for serious work or
if it might be issues with openbsd on the iBook.
