I was hoping to portray how utterly ignorant on the matter of using RAID cards I was in my original post, as I was sure my problem was due to this rather than a hardware/software issue that a dmesg could address. The manpages and faqs are wonderfully explicit, but they also assume a certain knowledge of a given subject (RAID, for example). I consider this a feature, not a bug BTW, and would never want that to change. But I guess a dmesg is a good baseline to start or end the conversation on the lists, so your point is taken.
