I use postfix (and dovecot) with self signed certificates, never had any 
issues, apart from initial 'accept?' , use 587 and 143ssl, it just works, both 
k9 and kaiten.

Though, recent upgrade of mail client, either k9 or k10, caused the need to re 
accept certificate.
