You announced yourself as fairly newbie (your own words). Therefore I gave you my honest advice of "don't do it". There is tons of advice in mailing list archives. I suggest that you look for posts by Victor Duchovni (his name is sometimes spelled Viktor Dukhovni). He did ball-park 400/s deliveries around the time of the Google IPO. It's impossible to predict what exact bottleneck you will run into first with your mailing enterprise: threading in Java apps, Postfix queue meltdown during submission, dealing with dead hosts, or other bottlenecks.
