OK, that was kind of a smart-ass answer. But it's true.
They are identical. The various virtual files were copied via rsync and have
been verified as identical with diff which is why I thought the MX was the
issue.
I'll try it again with the same main.cf and see if that works, then try making
the dovecot changes again.
Make sure you postmap the files on the new system; don't count
on rsynced indexes to work properly without testing. It's not
unknown for there to be compatibility issues with indexed
files across apparently identical systems.
Turn on verbose logging for the smtpd process to see what's
different on the new system.
