Para envio de e-mail fora da sua intranet é necessário smtp autenticado, caso contrário o seu servidor retornará Relay access denied.
Para envio de e-mail sugiro sim efetuar a configuração do smtp autenticado. E recomendo o Dovecot para o mesmo. Pode se basear aqui <http://wiki.dovecot.org/HowTo/PostfixAndDovecotSASL>para ajudar.
