I must correct you here.  That is NOT an X crash.

That is a window manager crash. presumably either xinit, xdm, kdm or
whatever finishes the session when the window manager is done (as is
typical).

Mostly, i'm reminding you of this so that I don't end up debugging
marco's code when i'm mislead like this ;-).
