Well I was hasty to write that email so I won't forget to ask about it. It had been on my mind for couple of days and it popped my mind yesterday.
Reworking fetch to do things differently would be interesting and complicated. We might end up doing it at some point, just not right now...
Okay. I don't mind anymore because the author very quickly changed the format to "foo.tar.gz", I just wanted to notify about the issue and to make certain I haven't missed some knob. Thanks to all who responded. -- Antti Harri
