You remember correctly. At least, PHP's mail() function does; there are
PHP implementations of SMTP clients and the like, which do away with
this problem entirely. (And seem not to introduce a whole new slew of
problems, although it could just be that I haven't looked closely
enough.)
I can't point you to a specific one, though - I've not used PHP in a
while, and have no desire to look at it again.
Except to marvel at '// DO NOT REMOVE THIS COMMENT (the RSS is dependant
on it)'...
