I recommend patching the autoconf input file and regenerating configure
with autoconf. (I realise it's already done like that, but it could be
changed). It tends to result in less breakage in updates, and often
the changes are simpler (in fewer places).
That would be in m4/readline.m4 - which uses AC_LIB_LINKFLAGS_BODY.
While I'm admittedly a dilletante at both autotools and m4, I think getting
that right isn't simpler than patching up the configure script itself every
once in while... and that's after giving it a shot, of course :-)
