It certainly isn't normal. (The screenshots at
http://onion.dynserv.net/~timo/cmus.html will give you an idea of what
it should look like.)

Does pressing ^L (refresh screen) help?

What terminal emulator are you using? Does it make any difference if you
start cmus in an xterm or on the console?
