User error is never a bad guess with this user.

However, in this case the errors were not with compiling TeX using your
port, but with compiling your port in the first place.  Installing your
port did not install a couple of required packages.  These definitely
included ruby and ghostscript, but there may have been others.  I had
no problem actually compiling TeX with your port, but the dvi to ps and
dvi to pdf utilities required those two packages.

Does this make more sense?
