--disable-gps predates gpsmap and was not intended to do what you need. 
(actually, it never did anything and I have just removed it).

I am re-writing the configure code and have added a --disable-gpsmap 
option. If there are any other configure related changes that would 
help, please let me know. (Ditto any changes at all, as we will have to 
roll out a new release anyway).

Can you send me your port as it stands so I can see how things work in 
the ports build environment?
