Pete, That soms it up quit nicely, except that, after reading some mailings, I had the impression I had to install the port drm-515-kmod for the NVida card. As the port did not exist, I did the make install that gave the compilation error.
Graphics hardware is a new territory for me, so I expect more failing experiments. Very grateful that experts like you are willing to lend a helping hand.
