Seems to me you usually want to have a relatively new version, unless a 
specific port requires an old version. In my case I have been building my ports 
collections with:

DEFAULT_VERSIONS+=llvm=18

for quite a while now. And since I use a limited set, it is actually the _only_ 
llvm package that gets built.
