That's indeed a weak reason, I would have expected the reason to be "do
what original AT&T make did" :o

Definitely. Ok, I will eliminate this, it doesn't seem to be
well-defined how it *should* behave.

But hey, still not a bad thing to upgrade the portsnap env ;)
