with a read-only root this failed:
        pkg update

with a writable root the above works.

also, using portmaster …. (i don’t know which port, but suspect linux)
the root partition got filled up, and after some hunting i found 
du -hs /.pkgtemp.compat.7vhU2YxJLCDB/
243M    /.pkgtemp.compat.7vhU2YxJLCDB/
