ports/UPDATING missing, also Makefiles?

Hello:
        On a system running:

14.0-CURRENT FreeBSD 14.0-CURRENT #0 main-d6327ae8c1: Sun Jan 24 14:16:54 EST 
2021 amd64

        I update the ports tree every midnight.
        For the last few days, "make index" failed to complete.  On
investigating, I find not only are _many_ individual port Makefiles
missing but I no longer have a ports/UPDATING.
        What's up?
