Thanks for the reply, sorry for the delay in this reply on my part.

It's to allow easier processing and reporting of the data from
the database, ie selecting data based on subnets.

MySQL doesn't have built in functions to select IPs based on an IP
subnet, and so creating a text based WHERE cause to cater for compressed
IPv6 addresses is not possible. -having all digits would be excellent.
