I suspect rrdtool is designed for continuous updating, although I can't
imagine why that would be more efficient than a bulk update.   
I can see bulk updates being slow because of the computation 
involved in aggregation, and trendline calculation if that's turned on.

I am far from expert and would be interested in your conclusions.
