Apologies. This is Gentoo Linux (kernel 2.6.14).

Like I say, the really odd thing is that I _swear_ I had this running
fine (on an old box). I still have that box available, unchanged, and I
cannot get the -D flag to work (despite it daemonizing if I use the
"daemonize: true" config line).

Any thoughts of what to check / try. I've not tried an strace/truss (or
anything else) but am not sure how helpful that would be.
