I am outside the UK so some specifics may need to be corrected.

Firstly, the speed of the streams are roughly the same regardless of
format so that WMA, MP3, Flash/MP3 and Flash/AAC are all about 128kbits
for UK suers (and about 48kbits/sec for non UK). However, there are
some varations according to the stations (for example, I think R3 has a
higher speed, 5live is Mono). So link speed is unlikely to be the
problem. I think the WMA and AAC may be served from a different set of
servers so this is potentially part of the problem.

Of the players mention only SB2 plays WMA natively which means for SB1,
Softsqueeze and Squeezeplay - WMA is being transcoded on laptop into
Flac and Flac is being sent on your WLAN. This is also true for AAC.

This makes it very odd as SB2 should be playing WMA natively (unless
Windows Media native decode is disabled on the server - please check)
and no traffic between router and SB2. So if the stuttering problem is
server related then the SB2 should be OK. You should try increasing the
SB2 buffer (WebUI Settings/Advanced/Network/Radio Station Buffer
Seconds) and see if it helps.

I think the AAC decoding on the SBS may have bigger buffers compared to
the WMA transcoding app and so avoid the stuttering. You can get an
idea of buffer size difference by comparing the delay for AAC and WMA
between pressing play and hearing music.
