Thanks bpa. I wasn't getting options, as you describe, but that set me
thinking. After some digging around online, I found I had to execute a
file called lsregister, in a very deeply buried folder. Now Softsqueeze
does run for me (hooray!). I presume the change came after an OS update,
so it may be that other Mac users will stumble on the problem when they
come to try Softsqueeze. If they want to execute lsregister, this is the
command to put into Terminal...

/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/Current/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Support/lsregister
-kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
