Extension Downloader in 7.3 simplifies installing plugins and hopefully means plugins reach a wider audiance. By default SqueezeCenter lists plugins from a Logitech hosted "Recommended 3rd Party Plugin" list. At present this includes a very small list of plugins and I'd like to propose a process for nominating additional plugins to add to this list.
What I propose is that all plugin authors are encouraged to maintain an Extension Downloader compatible repository with the latest details of their plugins and to add it to the wiki page: http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/SqueezeCenter_Repositories We then agree via this forum a subset of the most popular plugins (and applets) for inclusion on the Recommended 3rd Party Plugin list. This will take information from the authors own repositories on a regular basis so that it is maintained up to date. However to make sure the list that people see only includes the most popular plugins and are known to be work for most people I think we need a process for nominating them which is subject to review by the community. What I propose is we set up a sticky thread on this forum. Any forum member can then nominate a plugin which is available in an authors repository for inclusion on the 3rd Party forum list, but we need this proposal to be supported by the forum to make sure that we only list popular and safe plugins (i.e. run on most platforms without issues and don't do anthing malicious). The aim is to make it easy to expose common plugins to people who won't visit the wiki page above, but to make sure we don't give SqueezeCenter a bad name by encouraging people to download flakey or worse malicious code. So to do this, how about we ask that each nomiation has 3 supporters from this forum who are regular members of this forum (say "senior" members). Also that ideally one of them has reviewed the code or the author is a regular member who is unlikely to write somethign malicious(!) Assuming we agree a nomination, then Logitech will have the final say but it can then be included on the recommendation list. Equally we can nominate plugins for removal if they are no longer maintained or relavent, but in this case we give the author chance to comment unless there is clearly a reason for removal such as it is no longer supported.
